Entrevista con Jacqueline Alcántara, ilustradora de ¡Sigamos subiendo! | Interview with Jacqueline Alcántara, illustrator of ¡Sigamos subiendo!

Jaqueline Alcántara ilustró ¡Sigamos subiendo! cuando solo se podía viajar a Santa Lucía a través de video y fotos. Sin embargo, esto le dio la perspectiva perfecta para trabajar en un libro que transporta a sus lectores a un lugar donde muchos no han estado. 

Ahora que el libro se encuentra disponible en español, más lectores se pueden unir a la protagonista y a su padre en su aventura al escalar los Pitones. En esta entrevista bilingüe, Jacqueline Alcántara cuenta cómo ilustró el libro, cómo las ilustraciones son otro tipo de “lenguaje” y cómo el aprender (ya sea a ilustrar o a hablar un segundo idioma) es un proceso continuo.

Jacqueline Alcántara illustrated Climb On! during 2020, when she could only travel to St. Lucia through videos and photos. However, this gave her the perfect perspective to work on a book that transports its readers to a place many have never been to before. As the title is now available in Spanish, more readers can join the protagonist and her father on their adventurous climb up the Pitons. In this bilingual interview, Jacqueline Alcántara discusses how she illustrated the book, how illustrations are another type of “language,” and how learning (whether to illustrate or speak a second language) is a continuous process.

¿Qué investigación hiciste mientras ilustrabas ¡Sigamos subiendo!? ¿Hubo algo sorprendente que aprendiste sobre Santa Lucía?

While illustrating Climb On! what research did you do? Was there anything surprising or fascinating you learned about St. Lucia? 

Cómo yo ya habia investigado St. Lucia para ilustrar El Campo,  por eso dediqué mi tiempo investigando las montañas Pinton, donde está ubicado el libro. Dibujé diferentes flores, plantas e animales que los personajes vieran durante su gran caminata. ‘Viajé’ por Google Earth y YouTube en esas montañas y por suerte encontré lindos paisajes y pude sacar ideas de todos los videos que ha bajado la gente. Algo fascinante y un hecho divertido se trata del color del aqua de la cascada, Diamond Falls. Quizás usted se preguntaba qué porque no la pinté de puro azul. Pues, esa cascada contiene muchos minerales que provienen de la tierra y las rocas; minerales como sufre, cobre, hierro, magnesio y calcio. La combinación de los minerales, agua y luz, convierten el agua en un caleidoscopio de colores. 

Since I had already learned about St. Lucia from my research for The Field I was mostly focused on researching the Piton mountains, where the story is set–sketching different flowers, plants and animals the characters would see along their hike! I took lots of Google Earth and YouTube trips there up and around the mountains and through St. Lucia and luckily I was able to get lots of great views and ideas from all the videos people have posted! One fun fact is about the waterfall in the book. You may wonder why I used colors other than blue. Well this waterfall, named Diamond Falls, is laced with lots of unique minerals from the soil and rock–like sulphur, copper, magnesium, iron, calcium, etc. and the combination of the minerals, the water, and the light turn it into a kaleidscope of colors!

¡Sigamos subiendo! está escrito como un texto bilingüe (en inglés y criollo). ¿Tuvo el uso de multiples idiomas una influencia en tus ilustraciones o tu manera de abordar este proyecto?

Climb On! was written as a bilingual text (English and Creole). Did the use of multiple languages influence your illustrations or your approach to the project? 

Baptiste incorporó palabras Criollas por todo el libro para enfatizar las partes importantes, lo cual me hizo sentir que era ‘Spanglish’ pero yo no estaba consiente de que me haya influido en mis ilustraciones. Sin embargo, siempre hay tantas decisiones subconscientes cuando uno dibuja que es posible que, sin esas palabras Criollas, las ilustraciones habrían sido distintas. 

Baptiste incorporates creole words throughout the book which makes it feels like Spanglish to me, and helps to emphasize important parts but I wasn’t consciously aware that it influenced my illustrations. However, there’s always so many subconscious decisions made when drawing that it’s possible without the creole words, it would have sparked a different illustration idea. 

Aprendiste español como segundo idioma, ¿puedes hablarnos sobre el proceso de aprender un idioma nuevo?

You learned Spanish as a second language–could you speak a bit about the process of learning a new language?

¡Hasta hoy sigo aprendiendo! Supongo que estaré aprendiendo español toda mi vida. Mis padres hablan Español y trataron de enseñarnos desde chiquitos, pero crecer en un ambiente de puro inglés junto con la falta de mis deseos, resultó en no aprenderlo bien. Nunca me gustaron las clases de español en el colegio y recibí mis peores notas en esas clases . Pero como adulta, desarollé un fuerte deseo de hablar bien y por eso he tomado clases en España, Honduras y Chicago y me gusta mucho aunque a veces sigue siendo frustrante.

I’m still learning! I suppose I will always be learning Spanish. Both my parents speak Spanish fluently and they tried to teach me when I was younger but I grew up in an all English speaking community. I really disliked language classes throughout school–I got my worst grades in those classes! But as an adult I’ve developed a strong desire to fully speak Spanish so I’ve continued learning by taking classes in Spain, Honduras, and Chicago and now I love the journey of continuing to learn, even though of course it’s still very frustrating at times! 

Las ilustraciones a menudo se describen como un lenguaje universal. ¿Qué esperas que digan o transmitan tus ilustraciones a los jóvenes lectores?

Illustrations are often described as a universal language. What do you hope your illustrations say or convey to young readers?

!Si, son un lenguaje universal! Espero crear un mundo y personajes suficientemente interesantes que el lector se transporte durante los momentos de leer el libro. Espero que el lector pueda conectarse con los personajes que ilustro y por eso es necesario pensar mucho sobre ellos: sus miedos, deseos, sueńos, etc. (igual a los escritores!). Por eso cuando hago los primeros  dibujos, trato de decidir como es su lenguaje corporal y su apariencia; ropa, pelo, etc. porque todos eso detalles nos comunican más sobre el personaje que el texto. 

Yes, they are a universal language! I hope that I’m able to create a world and characters rich and interesting enough that you are transported for the moments while you are reading the book. I hope to illustrate characters that connect to the reader and I like to do a lot of thinking about them–their fears, wishes, dreams etc. (as writers do!) so that when I’m sketching and deciding what their body language is, their look–clothes, hair, etc.–it tells us even more about this person that we learn from in the text.

I hope that I’m able to create a world and characters rich and interesting enough that you are transported for the moments while you are reading the book.

¿Qué consejos darías a los jóvenes que quieren ilustrar álbumes ilustrados?

What advice would you give to a young person who wants to illustrate picture books? 

Cada persona tiene su propria manera de entender el mundo y cada persona tiene su propio estilo de dibujar. Lo que más me encanta sobre la ilustracion es la variedad enorme de estilos y la variedad de historias en el mundo (y adentro de tí!). Su manera de dibujar y de visualizar el mundo puede dar vida a algunas de tantas historias. Así que nunca debe de comparar su modo de dibjar con otros.  Simplemente, dibuje mucho y practique y aprenda y diviertase dibujando a su manera natural.  

Everyone has a completely unique way of looking at the world and drawing the world. The thing I love most about illustration is the wide variety in styles. I realized that there are lots and lots of stories out there (or inside you!) that will come to life when they are matched with YOUR art. So don’t compare your way of drawing to anyone else, just draw and practice and learn, have a great time doing it and love the natural way you draw.
